Simmons getting notice

USA Today ranked Justin Simmons as the No. 1 prospect at the East-West Shrine game. While that is a nice accolade, that doesn't necessarily translate into First Round Status. It has a decent history, but the Shrine Bowl is not the Senior Bowl. If Simmons plays well and impresses, he might move up some draft boards. However, other Draft followers don't have him rated as highly.

The Draft is more important that usual for BC this year. We need all the good publicity we can get and saying we help mid-level recruits like Simmons reach the NFL is still a great pitch.

Justin Simmons embodies what it means to be a BC athlete, and I hope he has every success going forward. He worked so hard over his time here and ultimately will be one of the best defensive-backfield members we've ever had at the Heights.

I am amazed and very disappointed that not a single senior (Simmons, Wujciak, Daniels) from BC's terrific defense is on the Senior Bowl roster (I am assuming, therefore, that none of them was invited.) I plan to find out from the Senior Bowl PR guy (a former colleague of my husband, and a great guy) just exactly why this is the case, as it makes no sense. I can only assume that BC football has become so irrelevant that they are not even on the radar.

@dixieagle: A woman's perspective probably has it right. On the site, Simmons is ranked number 40 of safeties. That appears a little harsh. However, it is noted that he is 6'3". Of the 50 or so listed, there is only one who is taller. Kearse is 6'4". That may make a difference.

I emailed back and forth with the Senior Bowl PR guy, Rob. He told that Justin Simmons is currently considered an alternate for the SB, but that the latest word from scouts is that he wasn't having a great East/West Shrine game week; that seems to contradict much of what I've read, though I haven't seen anything from the last day or so.

I understand Wujciak is considered to fall short in matches against bigger blockers. (The thought of someone who's 300 lbs. being "smallish" is hilarious to me...)

I've also heard nothing about Steven Daniels.

We're going to a Senior Bowl dinner Tuesday night, so I might hear something else then, though time is getting short.

Too bad about Bates' Michigan chances dimming.

Would love a follow-up on Daniels. Think he's a stud.

@mod34b: Earth to mod. This is a very fine blog. However, there hasn't been an article about a female athlete since 1955. This is all about football and basketball. There are one sentence announcements about soccer and one paragraph pronouncements about hockey. If you don't think that there is a "female perspective", then you have been drinking too much of Barry's and Hillary's kool aid. Lesley Visser and Elizabeth Hasselbech have always been of the highest tradition of BC. Lesley always did great interviews with always a BC pat on the back. Elizabeth only seems to be known here for the fact that she is married to Tim the brother of Matt.
