BC adds Kansas to Football schedule (seriously)

I've called most of BC's recent Football scheduling short-sighted but justifiable. I am having a hard time rationalizing the new series with Kansas. BC will host the Jayhawks in 2019 and go to Lawrence in 2020. This means that after it became clear that the ACC would not add a ninth conference game, BC has locked in games with Kansas, Purdue, Rutgers, Mizzou and Stanford. If you take each team's current state and their historical performance, that is some cynical, borderline cowardly scheduling. We have no idea how good any of them will be when we take the field, but past performance tells us mediocre at best, with a good chance of being terrible.

The only commendable aspect to this current set up is BC is scheduled to play three non-conference Power 5 games in 2019. My guess is that will be more than any team in the country.

Aside from providing an opponent, Kansas Football doesn't do much else for BC. We don't recruit the area. While we have some Alumni in the Kansas/Missouri, those folks are already getting the Mizzou game in their neck of the woods. I doubt Kansas fans will travel en masse to Boston. If they are good in those years, we will get some respect. If they are not, no one will care.

I understand Addazio's cautious scheduling in the near future. He might actually have to coach those games! But I hope that Bates and BC use any game five or more years out as a chance to do something exciting. Why be scared? The odds say none of them will be around when BC plays those games.

Add horrific football scheduler to list of Bates accomplishments. Kansas, Purdue, Missouri, Temple and Rutgers (at least that makes recruiting/alumni sense). He does get credit someday for Stanford & Ohio State but those are both about 10 years away.

We do play in toughest division in CFB right now, so we are getting Clemson, FSU, VT and Ville every year so I get it but can't we schedule Ole Miss/Miss St/Cal/Maryland etc. Those teams are not world beaters and there is some alumni/recruiting/warm weather interest in those games.

UVA just announced game vs. Georgia in 2020 for the Peach Game Kickoff. UVA is horrific in football so I imagine if they would take UVA they would take us. That is an exciting game for program, school and recruiting.

When is a Bates announcement coming ATL? I can't believe he is still operating as AD if he is out. No one in college athletics actually gets to end of contract. They are either given extension or fired the year BEFORE their last year!

Does anybody have any idea what is going on?

I'm missing the anguish. The 5 teams mentioned are Big 12, Big 10, Big 10, SEC and PAC 12. Those are real leagues putting out real football teams, each school much larger than BC. Are they Ohio State and Alabama? No. But they're a darn sight more interesting the Weber State, University of Rhode Island or any of the Directional Michigans we've had on our schedule over the years.

I agree, Herz

Pad wins pad wins! Make the apathetic student body feel good!! Guarantee 75% of the student body thinks Kansas is a good football program

I think Brad Bates might be selling BC games to get his next job!

Kansas??? Purdue? Mizzou?? yeesch.

Big name schools that have fallen on hard times. BC has no room to talk. Look in the mirror, boys and girls.

It is good scheduling if you are looking for competitive games that you have a chance to win.

ATL is entitled to his opinion but I totally disagree with his line of reasoning. In fact, I think he is flat out wrong if he thinks scheduling Kansas, Purdue, Missouri or Rutgers is bad. He misguides his readers by ignoring reality. Isn't it funny how his info sources often times fall flat?

I am not a Brad Bates fan but ATL is wrong about him. Bates has not lost his job and he is not going to lose his job any time soon. Deal with it and move on.

As an AD, Bstes makes a call to bigger name programs and floats the do you want to play us question. And, if they say no. what is Bates supposed to do? Beg them to play BC? It takes two to tango.

Geezer eagle said...

Why oh why does Bates still have his job? Is this clown really going to stay,?

mod34b said...

What does Kasper know that we don't? Anything? Seems like speculation.

Mod, any other major power that took the money sports seriously would have fired Bates by now. That's what scares me.

Agreed. We have theologians thinking about the impact of football and money on our souls. Not working on the football front but I got a kick ass soul. Thanks Father Leahy

I'm with Herzylax22 on this one. It's great news. Kudos to Brad & Steve and anyone else who might have had a hand in these schedule enhancements. Just keep teams from these leagues coming.

Remember too that Alabama is afraid to play us. We've got a three-game win streak against them.

Bates set a pretty low bar with Wagner et al. scheduling actual Power 5 programs is a step up. its mediocre, like everything else Bates has done.

Nice bball win. Young kids are growing.

Hope the students hop on for the ride.

Another impressive win. As usual Bowman and Robinson lead the way. BC is finally competitive which is nice. Christian > Daz.

EL MIZ said...

Bowman is a total stud. guy was a football recruit 18 months ago. outplayed Smith on NCST who NBADRAFT.net has going 3rd overall in the 2017 NBA draft.

Robinson also very good. what happened to Sagay?

we desperately need some muscle up front. that said, 2 ACC wins before MLK Day!

Herzy:

I agree that Kansas is better than a MAC team and have generally positive reviews to the other Power 5 decisions. But this added makes me cynical. Remember BC HAS TO SCHEDULE AN OUT OF CONFERENCE POWER 5 under the new rules. Rutgers can be justified. Purdue too. Mizzou...OK. Kansas not seeing the upside.

Kasper:

We will see on Bates. The lack of a contract extension, the San Diego State job and the fact that BC restructured the fund raising around him, are not positive signs of his future.

Knucklehead said...

Wasn't Wagner because another game fell through?

bceagle91 said...

Knucklehead, I think it was Howard that was on the schedule because another game fell through. We had a home and home with New Mexico State and they backed out of coming here. Bates had to scramble to get another opponent, so we had that fiasco.

Knucklehead said...

Hey Kasper, Bates better get his act together. Deal with it.

Thank you for the information 91

Herzylax22, well said. As for Mizzou in the middle of Missouri between KC and StL, Georgia Eagle is right about being on down time. They were very good when they first went to the SEC and won the SEC West twice and were then blown out by Alabama. There was a racial boycott against the president and chancellor with both leaving. The coach backed the players and was nudged into retirement. The defensive coordinator took over and is trying to build the program back from chaos. As for BC, again with Georgia Eagle, there is still chaos to deal with. BC hasn't yet had an incident like a player boycott that Minnesota went through. The entire squad appeared to sign on that they condoned "gang rape". Once that was clarified, the players moved on to the right side of the room. The conjecture is that Addazio has righted a sinking ship like Christian. I say that he is a bum and needs to go. Someone has to be brought in as A.D. for a fair evaluation for the 2.6 mill per year wonder. It looks like Tommie C is being courted by Jacksonville whose owner is an Arab car parts wonder from Carbondale, Il. He was manipulated out of owning the Rams by WalMart and Stan Kroenke. The point is that the Midwest is not that bad and Mighty Mizzou will be back. The question is one of "just where will BC be"?

I am already planning the 8 hr drive from Denver to Lawrence! Hands down the best roadtrip ever.

Disagree with the premise. Sure, Kansas is a total boner game in an area we don't recruit, but Stanford, Purdue, and Rutgers are major conference teams that have been pretty good at times recently. We need a west coast game, and USC/UCLA are not going to take our calls, and the other states are not fertile grounds. That's a good game for each side because it is winnable against a team that might be good. Purdue and Rutgers, while certainly less likely to be in contention to win their conference, can pull together 8 wins, is beatable, and represents an area we can draw recruits from. Missouri is at least a foot in the door in the SEC (like, seriously, when have we ever played the SEC in anything except a bowl game?) and could rebound to compete in their division.

Tom O'Brien "Made BC Great Again" by ditching the title contenders and scheduling the academies, Notre Dame, B-list ACC schools, Stanford, Penn State, and Baylor (and UConn). Toward the end, we started getting MAC teams dumped on us... I always felt those were lose/lose: if we win, so what... if we lose, Jesus Christ, how did you lose to Directional MAC?

There is no incentive to lose 62-0 to Alabama, Ohio State, or any other known Top 15 and Playoff contender on national TV. We have plenty of opportunities to do that in ACC play. All it does is rile up the message boards and not provide any date on whether or not Daz (or the next coach) can coach these guys up). Other B-list teams we should be playing: Cincinnati, West Virginia, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, BYU, California, the academies again (since they are decent), and anybody in Texas once for a home and home (Houston would be a good candidate, lets aspire for A&M or UT).

Until BC establishes a program that can bring in 4-5 stars occasionally, why set up our guys up for failure like that.
